I
met the Ozawa family in the fall of 1998, through my friend Toshie, the
Ozawa's youngest daughter. Since that time, they have opened their hearts
and home to me--still very much a stranger--and shown me tenderness that
crosses all cultural and verbal boundaries. The following photographs can
only give you the faintest glimmer of the joy these people have brought
into my life, and can only suggest the depth of love that flows between
them. The irony in all of this is that I know very few facts about these
people, and they about me. In truth, I understand only a fraction of what
they say, as we stumble around and inevitably trip over the language barrier.
These photographs are a modest attempt to skirt that language barrier and
communicate through images. Ultimately, however, true communication transcends
both words and images, and can only be felt in the heart. |
